Wildlife Books and Field Guides:
National Audubon Society Field Guide
to Florida (Paperback) by National Audubon Society (Corporate Author),
Peter Alden, Rick Cech
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
With its colorful coral reefs, excellent birding, and tropical temperatures,
Florida remains a popular vacation spot for the ecologically minded. In this
concisely detailed volume you'll become acquainted with the state's geologic
origins, natural history, and diverse habitats (salt marshes, mangrove swamps,
prairies, and woodlands). A field guide assists in the identification of some of
the region's wildflowers, trees, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, butterflies, mammals,
and birds, including the elusive manatee, three species of dolphin, and the rare
snail kite. An extensive sampling of the area's best parks, preserves, beaches,
forests, islands, and wildlife sanctuaries, with thorough descriptions and visitor
information on 50 destinations, is also included. For instance, the section on
Everglades National Park includes information on wildlife viewing possibilities,
driving directions, and popular touring attractions inside the park (such as Shark
Valley, where a 15-mile loop via foot, rental bike, or tram affords close views of
alligators, anhingas, and wading birds). Lesser-known areas such as Pelican Island
National Wildlife Refuge and Withlacoochee State Forest are also featured.
More than 1,300 color photographs heighten the quality of this handy compilation.
Field Guide Art of Roger Tory Peterson:
Eastern Birds (Field Guide Art of Roger Tory Peterson, Eastern Birds)
Editorial Reviews: From Publishers Weekly
Precision and clarity characterize the pictures of birds that Peterson produced
for field guides--from his first, published by Houghton Mifflin in 1934, to his
most recent. These two volumes gather 300 color plates from Peterson's
"schematic illustrations," which have helped countless bird-watchers identify
their subjects. The artist's introduction provides a brief history of his career,
beginning with his initial interest in birds at age 11, continuing through his
studies in New York City at the Art Students' League and at the National
Academy of Design and concluding with his association with the National
Audubon Society and his preeminent position as an illustrator and a force
for conservation. Organized into such sections as "The Swimmers" and
"Birds of Prey" (each accompanied by brief introductory text), the plates,
which generally feature no more than four species, are printed on the right-
hand pages, with the trademark silhouettes and identifying aids on the left.
Noting that he developed this art for use in the field, Peterson observes that
these pictures are neither portraits nor "painterly." The collection pays
eloquent tribute to Peterson's inestimable role in increasing the public's
appreciation of the natural world. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Exploring Wild South Florida: A Guide
to Finding the Natural Areas and Wildlife of the
Everglades and Florida Keys (Paperback)
by Susan D. Jewell, Manabu Saito (Illustrator)
Book Review:
Wild South Florida does a pretty good job of describing the area for people
planning to visit the Everglades or nearby regions. The author provides a
comprehensive listing of national, state, and city parks that would interest
anyone who loves the outdoors. The author starts out by describing the
different types of wild nvironments in South Florida and the wildlife that
inhabit these places. A nice 16-page color picture section is included. The
information included for each area covers how to get to each park (the book
also contains a map), how much certain places cost, and most importantly,
the plant and animal life found there.

Backyard Composting: Your Complete
Guide to Recycling Yard Clippings (Paperback)
by Harmonious Technologies (Corporate Author)
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
There have been many articles over the years about the benefits of composting
for gardeners, but living in the city without a yard, this reviewer never really
thought it was something that would apply to me with my handful of flower boxes
and potted plants outside. Joke's on me! This book tells you everything you need
to know about composting and household refuse, and most importantly, how to get
STARTED, and will be enough to convince you to finally get organized and go for it.
Glow in-the-Dark Constellations (Paperback)
by C. E. Thompson
"If you look up into the sky on a clear night, you will be able to see glowing
planets and twinkling stars..." |
A simple, straightforward ntroduction to ten northern hemisphere constellations:
two visible all year and two for each season. Thompson starts with a few pages of
background on what constellations are, who named them, and how they move in the
sky. He then devotes a double-page spread to each constellation; one page gives
information while the facing page shows a dark blue sky in which white dots
represent background stars and glow-in-the-dark dots show the constellation itself.
The end sheets show a north-facing and south-facing view of the sky for each season,
with the tenlisted constellations marked. Here, both constellations and background
stars glow in the dark if exposed to bright light ahead of time. Scattered throughout
are suggested ways to learn the constellations, ranging from studying one until you
can picture it in your mind to using the book with a flashlight in a dark room to play
a shape identification game with a friend. Clint Hatchett's The Glow-in-the-Dark
Night Sky Book (Random, 1988) packs three times as many constellations into fewer
pages with almost no text and is confusing. Glow-in-the-Dark Constellations does
not attempt as much, but thanks to a relaxed, friendly text and more thought about its
use, it succeeds far better. Both are oversized books, but Constellations is smaller
than Night Sky Book. Sometimes, indeed, less is more.

Games for Girl Scouts (Paperback)
by Girl Scouts of United States of America
Games for Girl Scouts, June 11, 2000
As a new girl scout leader, I found this book to be a very valuable tool. It is filled
with hundreds of games that can be played in many different settings. In each chapter,
it explains why play certain types of games and why they benefit the girls. It is arranged
under easy to reference chapter headings with symbols by each game indicating whether
games can be played indoors, outdoors, either, by small groups, large groups, either,
international origins and age requirements. These are only guidelines as many of the
games can be modified to suit individual troop needs. Many of the games need no extra
props, just the girls themselves. Games for Girl Scouts also make reference to other
Girl Scout materials which can be incorporated into the learning process along with the
game or games being played. I highly recommend Games for Girl Scouts, not just for
those involved with scouting, but for anyone who works with children. It is handy,
complete and fun!
